Dino Melaye’s recall process fails

Dino Melaye

The recall process to unseat embattled Kogi West senator, Dino Melaye has failed.

INEC declaration officer, Professor Ukertor Gabriel Moti, who made the announcement, said only 5.34 per cent of the 351,146 registered voters in the constituency were verified which does not satisfy a requirement of the law for a referendum.

There were 189,870 signatories and only about 18,742 were verified, which represents less than 10 per cent of those who signed the recall letter to INEC.

For the verification exercise to succeed, 50 per cent plus one of the signatories to the petition had to be verified.

SATELLITE TIMES reported the apathy that characterised the recall process that began on Saturday with poor turnout of petitioners.

Some petitioners alleged that their signatures were forged to reflect on the voters register.

Following violence that erupted in Mopamuro Local Government, six out of the 10 wards in the LGA were cancelled.

Former governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole, Thursday formally declared his intention to contest for the national chairmanship of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The former governor is reportedly favoured to replace outgoing chairman of the party, John Odigie-Oyegun. He is believed to have received the endorsement of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Oshiomhole said he was joining the national chairmanship race to contribute to the growth of the party.

The former labour leader made the declaration in Abuja at the Transcorp Hilton hotel. The event was witnessed by the chairman of APC governors and Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha.

Oshiomhole will slug it out with the incumbent chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun, if the latter decides to seek re-election.

Both men from Edo State were former governors of the state.

It will be recalled that a meeting by APC state chairpersons and leaders from the South-south ended in acrimony as there was no unanimity to have Oshiomhole as the sole national chairmanship aspirant from the South-South

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state

Over 2,100 delegates are gathered in Ekiti to determine the fate of the three contenders for the governorship ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The aspirants include the Deputy Governor, Kolapo Ishola who enjoys the support of the incumbent governor, Ayodele Fayose. Others are the lawmaker representing Ekiti South Senatorial District in the Senate, Abiodun Olujimi, and the immediate past PDP National Publicity Secretary, Dayo Adeyeye.

Whoever emerges winner at the Tuesday’s primaries among the three aspirants would fly the party’s ticket at the July 14 governorship election in the state.

Meanwhile, the national leadership of the PDP had appealed to the participating delegates, members and supporters of the party in the state to continue in their resolve to work together to ensure a smooth and hitch-free poll.

The party in a statement issued by the National Publicity Secretary Kola Ologbondiyan on Monday, commended all stakeholders, particularly the aspirants for the spirit of sportsmanship being displayed in their commitment towards a peaceful, free and credible process.

PDP also applauded stakeholders in the state for keeping to their resolve to work together to ensure the victory of the party at the July governorship election, irrespective of the outcome of the primary elections.

The party also cautioned against attempts by external forces that aim to disrupt the peace of the state and asked party members to be vigilant and not to give any space to such mischief.
